What is a diet?

A particular selection of food, especially as designed or prescribed to improve a person’s physical condition or to prevent or treat a disease: a diet low in sugar.

What is a fad diet?

A fad diet is a diet that promises quick weight loss through what is usually an unhealthy and unbalanced diet. Fad diets are targeted at people who want to lose weight quickly without exercise. Some fad diets claim that they make you lose fat, but it’s really water weight you’re losing.

How many diets have you attempted?

Many overweight people attempt everyday to lose weight. Being overweight or obese is no fun and very challenging when attempting to lose weight. More than one-third (36.5%) of U.S. adults have obesity. ( Everyday a new diet appears in some sort of mainstream avenue such as TV, Magazines, Social Media, etc. Are any of these so called Diet Fads realistic or a Diet for that matter?

Society is about hope and believing. Having the hope it will work and if one believes; anything can work. There is a science to understanding your own personal body and its weight loss journey. No two people are built the same.

The questions is how many diets have you attempted? Did any of them work and was the weight kept off?

Personal Diet and Fad Diet experience

Struggling with obesity in one’s adult life is an emotional roller coaster.  The following are the hopes that one believed would work:

  • Diet Pills – Metabolife, Caffeine, Herbalife
  • Diet Programs – Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, Belly Fat Cure, Atkins,

For years one hopes and keeps returning to programs or diet pills that helped them lose twenty pounds but gained them all back because they lost and celebrated by eating. After celebrating the weight loss, one does not return to the program or pills, hence regaining all the weight back.

After attempting all the diets a light bulb lights up and realizes that diets and the diet fads were only providing a sense of belonging and giving the hope one desires in their weight loss journey. How many of you out there have that friend that never gains a pound? Or has that friend once they are obsessively committed, take off the weight and keep it off? Sound familiar? Envy sets in, the sense of failure is terrible. One will deflect to unhealthy eating to comfort their own wounds of not losing the weight and keeping it off.

What to do?

Attempting all the diets out there and the weight yo-yo’ing; one may find themselves lost in the diet world.  The word “DIET” is not a bad word. First, you have to ask yourself what will work? Many struggle with starting or starting but not finishing or what many like to call make the change into a new life-style.

Life-style, is this a new word for diet?  Life-style is the habits, attitudes, tastes, moral standards, economic level, etc.,that together constitute the mode of living of an individual or group. ( Something that is extremely easy to do is pick up and keep are bad habits; in which would be considered a life-style.  Life-style is not a diet.  Life-style is not a selection of food. Life-style is a choice. Life-style is what you make of it in your life. 

Back to the one friend who lost all the weight and kept it off. What has this friend done? They made a life-style change. That person has changed their attitude towards food, habits, tastes and standards of living. This person made a conscience effort to change their bad habits and change them into positive habits, hence the life-style change. How does a person get to this point? Life-style change can be difficult or should it be difficult? Only the one person is in control of their lives. A choice is all it takes. Does one choose a diet? No, but a healthy well planned diet is a type of choice, a life-style.  This is the smell of success on its way to a new way of thinking.

Not Depending on others

The fad diets are dependent of people to survive. Also, the diet industry need people to believe in order for their process to work. What is the truth of your own life? Depend on one-self through knowledge of food, diet and life-style. Everyone requires some kind of support system to stay in the game. But is the diet a sport in which you need a team to help? Maybe so, but if one works through their personal issues and find a healthy medium of what will work in their life-style then there is a possibility that a proper diet will help you lose weight.

Dependency is not rare, many people need to depend on others for their own success to work. A solid support system starts in your home. As the saying goes “Home is where the heart is”. Not everyone is at the same pace you may be, but communicating that you need help is very important. One cannot assume the family knows what is going through your brain. Learn to depend on yourself first so that one can move forward and implement a good habit life-style.

Fad Diets are not bad

Fad diets are not bad. Why? These fad diets all provide a sense of good knowledge. Reading and understanding their madness of thinking. The fad diets all provide something educational. Facts about food. Not all maybe scientifically proven, which is okay, but they offer the nutritional content on their suggested diet. Fad diets also offer healthy recipes, some recipes are strange foods that normally one does not typically eat, but eating out of the norm is good. One will miss out on an experience that maybe very appetizing.

Read everything you see, then evaluate what has been read and look up statistics to back up the information you have just read. Not everything we see in social media is true. There are scholarly articles out there in which one can find good information.
